The pollsters had Hillary ahead by a little. But Trump won. What happened?
The short of it is, we voters were given two unpalatable candidates. One candidate promised to get the country back on the right track. The other insisted that we were on the right track all along. But we weren't, we still aren't, and everybody except newsies know it.
Basically Wall St speculators crashed the world economy back in 2008. And it has stayed crashed. US GNP growth has been a measly 1% per year for the eight years of Obama. It should be 3%. Obamacare, the war on coal, 80,000 pages of new federal regulation, crazy federal tax policies and general federal meddling has combined to flatten US economic growth. And people feel it, they cannot find jobs, their children cannot find jobs, they don't get raises, they loose their houses to foreclosure, and everything costs more. The country is on the wrong track and everyone knows it.
So, faced with two unpalatable candidates, voters went for the unpalatable candidate that promised to fix the economy, rather than the unpalatable candidate that claimed things were just peachy.
The profession of economics did not help the situation. Economist say a depression is over when things stop getting worse. Great Depression 2.0 flattened out way back in 2008 but it hasn't gone away, the economy is still not growing. Voters, workers, and citizens don't think a depression is over until things climb back up to where they used to be (ought to be). So we had all the economists (a lefty lot) claiming Great Depression 2.0 was over back i9n 2009. The Obama administration liked this myth, and spread it around, and the newsies (another lefty lot) picked it up and pushed it.
But truth is stronger than fiction, and the voters knew things were bad and voted for a guy who said he would fix them, despite that guy's big mouth.

Russians hacked the DNC?
I'm hearing on NPR, Fox, and the 'Net a theory that the Russians hacked the DNC emails and released them on Wikileaks to help The Donald.
Why in the world would they do that?
Hillary is a known quantity. She is not very smart, she can be bought, she won't make waves. She has had four years as Secretary of State to demonstrate her incompetence in foreign affairs. If I was Putin, that's exactly the kind of person I would like as president of the only surviving superpower.
Trump on the other hand, might do anything. America is an exceptional country, and with imaginative leadership it can do almost anything. Under mediocre leadership (Hillary) nothing much will happen. But under charismatic leadership America won WWII, developed nuclear weapons, traveled to the Moon, eliminated polio, and gave its people the best standard of living in the world. Under Trump, America could be an irresistible adversary to Russian expansion worldwide. Why risk that? Far better to have a mediocrity who will let things slide as they have been doing.
So I don't believe the Russians wanted to help Trump.

NAFTA, pro and con
According to Wikipedia (a reasonably impartial source) NAFTA dropped tariffs between the three countries to zip in nearly all cases by now. It took President Bill Clinton's best efforts to get NAFTA ratified over the dead bodies of US unions. NAFTA did increase trade between Mexico, Canada and the US by a lot, perhaps 50% over the years since 1993 when NAFTA was ratified. It also did contribute to US job losses of maybe 500,000 jobs. These numbers can be controversial, but Wikipedia is the most balanced source I am aware of.
We had The Donald on TV yesterday trashing NAFTA up one side and down the other. He promises to "renegotiate" the NAFTA treaty. He claimed that NAFTA is a US job killer. In this, he has, or ought to have, the warm support of US unions who have been anti NAFTA since the beginning.
We had the "three amigos) (Obama, Trudeau, and I can't remember the name of the Mexican president) on TV today. All saying nice things about NAFTA, and the need to keep it going.
Nobody said anything about admitting the UK to NAFTA.

Is it a two man (two person?) race now?
Not really for The Donald. He has Hillary to trash, Sanders voters to woo, women voters to pacify, his base wanting more red meat speeches, some backstabbing inside his own campaign (Cory Lewandoski and the Republican establishment), and a number of way out campaign promises (get Mexico to pay for the wall, ban Muslim immigration, and others) that will be very hard to make good on. That seems like a pretty full house of troubles needing dealing with.
For real amazement, the newsies are reporting that Hillary has been spending millions on TV ads. The Donald is spending zip on TV. The last poll they showed on TV had The Donald pretty much even with Hillary despite the wide difference in TV ad spending.
Can The Donald pull it off? Or are we doomed to a Hillary presidency?

Whither the Republican party?
Lotta handwringing going on. The Donald is leading in pledged delegates right now. He seems to pick up 35% of the primary vote every time. Right now he has 600 and some delegates, only half what is needed to clinch the Republican nomination. Ted Cruz is behind, but not impossibly far behind, with maybe 400 and some delegates. Maybe The Donald will pick up another 600 delegates by convention time, which will give him 1237, the amount needed to win out right. And maybe he won't. No body knows, and nobody really believes the polls.
If The Donald gets enough delegates by convention time, he still has a problem. Although 35% of the party likes him enough to vote for him, that leaves 65% of the party that doesn't like him, plus all the democrats don't like him. Does not look good for The Donald to beat Hilliary. The Republican establishment is scared out of their socks by these odds. If The Donald leads the party to a resounding defeat in November, they will most likely get voted out of office themselves. So they are going all out to get anyone besides The Donald nominated. At this point, the only likely alternative is Ted Cruz. All the other candidates have dropped out (except Kasich who doesn't have much in the way of delegates). The Trump voters will be outraged by a convention that doesn't nominate their man and might do all sorts of bad things.
If The Donald lacks the delegates by convention time, all sorts of things might happen. Ted Cruz might be able to pull all the non Trump delegates behind him and get the nomination on a later ballot. The establishment might try to slip in Romney or McCain, or some body, anybody else. If they succeed they will outrage all the voters, which is a bad thing. Some charismatic nobody might arise and sweep thru the convention on a wave of applause. That happened, once, Wendell Wilkie back in 1940. Hasn't happened since.
Or something else might happen. Stay tuned.

The Donald is fun to watch on TV
I enjoy watching him put on a show. He's a good showman, he has an audience, and he is going to town. He is way ahead in the polls. Even if he fails to get the nomination, he will still be the best known billionaire in the entire world.
The Donald is coming out of the business community, in fact, out of the in-your-face New York City business community. In business the saying is "The customer is always right." Doesn't matter that the customer offends you personally, has bad breath, bad manners, and holds with the wrong ideas. You will take his money anyhow. Somehow I don't think this works in politics like it does in business. If the voters dislike you, they won't vote for you no matter what you promise to do for them.
As president, The Donald would go exactly no where. He shoots off his mouth too much. He is a bull in a china shop. It would only take him two days to anger everyone in the country, and another two days to anger everyone over seas. And you cannot get much done if everyone dislikes you and wants to get even with you.
