Youngest son bought a new laptop. UPS delivered yesterday, and he spent last evening tinkering with it. He reports that Windows 7 comes with 86 "processes" sucking up RAM and CPU time. (Windows XP gets by on 15 "processes"). It's slow. And fat. And power management comes set to automatically turn the machine off after 15 minutes without a keystroke, even running on AC power. He noticed this feature after setting the machine up to download a raft of stuff over night.
Youngest son is about to reload with Windows XP.

I've seen both pluses and minuses with Win7. If he was running the 64-bit version (which I think most new machines do), then they also have to max out on RAM. The biggest problems with 'slow' machines is the amount of RAM installed.
We've been going through a computer refresh at work and all of our new machines run Win7. We had the same 'slow' problem until our IT guy made sure each machine had at least 8GB of RAM. After that they were very fast.
How much RAM came with your son's machine?
